The Vision Behind YSA

Ms. Kim Baust

Ms. Kim Baust

Founder & Director | B.S. & M.Ed. in Elementary Education | 26+ Years Experience

Kim Baust founded The Young Scholar Academy with one powerful belief: that every child deserves to be truly known by their teacher. With over 26 years of teaching experience, Kim built YSA from the ground up — selecting every teacher, designing the curriculum, and crafting the kind of warm, connected community that makes kids actually want to show up.

YSA is more than a school — it's the learning community Kim always wished existed. A place where relationships come first, where parents are true partners, and where every child is celebrated for exactly who they are. Her motto says it all: "Where magic happens."

When not teaching, you'll find Jamie spending time with her family, exploring new coffee shops, reading a good book, enjoying the outdoors, or winning during family game nights.

Ms. Swan

Ms. Swan

B.S. English & M.A.T. Secondary English · Special Ed. Certified · 2024 Teacher of the Year

Middle & Secondary English · Grades 6–10

Ms. Swan has been teaching students for over 8 years in grade levels ranging from 6th to 12th grade in public, public charter, and virtual classrooms. In 2024, Ms. Swan was awarded Teacher of the Year.

She studied English with a concentration in literature before completing her Master's in the Arts of Teaching Secondary English. She is licensed to teach secondary English as well as Special Education.

Ms. Swan loves teaching English Language Arts because she knows she has a lot of potential to make a positive impact and help students find a passion for reading and writing. She designs her courses to be rich and engaging experiences that help students become better readers, writers, listeners, speakers, and most of all, critical thinkers. Her philosophy as a teacher is to equip students with transferrable skills, so that what they learn in English class helps them in real life.

When Ms. Swan is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband and toddler, running, reading, and cooking (a work in progress).

"I was very worried to allow someone else to teach my child as he has always been homeschooled by me — however my son loves Miss Dena's class. So much so that we also signed him up for her science and social studies classes for the entire year. If you are on the fence, just do it!"
